The purpose of this site is to act as an online home for various articles and pieces of writing that discuss the history of the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland, its congregations, personalities and constituent parts. The idea came out of some sermons given in the summer of 2017 which attracted some interest. This kind of site is the easiest way to make them more available, it may also be a suitable place to add other pieces from time to time.
The articles entitled:
The First Subscription Controversy
The Second Subscription Controversy
The Dissenters’ Chapels Act
Division and Controversy
Consolidation
all began as sermons preached at Downpatrick, Ballee or Clough and are published here in amended form. They are not intended as definitive statements or as academically rigorous documents but merely introductions for those who would like to learn something of the background of the events they describe.
